THE RISE OF THE HEMPENEUR LOGO 2kileyWho is? Kiley Routley.  I am a young mother, with 3 children ages 16, 14, & 8, in a long term marriage with my high-school sweet heart, entrepreneur and creator of all recipes and ideas for my business of 9 years.  Like many businesses, Back to Earth Enviro Products started in the kitchen. Fascinated by aromatherapy, herbarium, the art of soap making, and making many other earth friendly products; founder Kiley Routley quickly became hooked by the alchemy of the process. After researching the effects of toxins in households, as well as personal care products, Kiley started asking the question: “What harsh chemicals are we bringing into our homes and what are we putting on our bodies?”  This has led Kiley to use 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oil blends and local herbs for her cleaning products, personal care products, as well as her all natural hand crafted bar soap. Kiley has since moved from her kitchen to a farm-gate store front in beautiful Coldstream, British Columbia Canada

Shout Out to Kiley Routley this business woman was Nominated for the Entreprenuer for the Year and WON Green Business of the Year through the Business Excellence Awards! What is your hemp related business?

Owner of Back to Earth Enviro Products IncRecipe’ creator of the Weeds & Seeds Survival Cereal.  Along with Buckwheat, Coconut, Chia, Quinoa, Cinnamon, Plantain & Dandelion, Hemp is one of the main ingredients.

What is your personal philosophy?

Our Mission is “To improve health by taking into consideration the delicate balance of our bodies and our environment”.

Transparency is important for us as we act as stepping stones through trial and error education and research thus re-igniting our customers about earth awareness.

We are passionate and loyal to the ingredients in our recipes, and honor the earth by only taking what we need and leave the rest for another day of harvest.  For a lot of our local customers who tell us  that ‘yes’ they can buy our products in town, but they like the drive and love our inviting ‘way’, our product knowledge, as well as the ‘hug’ they get when they go.

Day in a life for you?

1507132_773902486006897_390152288_nAs a mother of 3, my life is already full of sports, home, and family.  However, equally important for me is the drive to do as much ‘local’ as possible, and therefore once my home life is in order, I hike up to the mountains that surround us and harvest the indigenous plants (in season at the time), bring them back to my storefront in Lavington, BC where the magic begins with the recipes that run through my head all night long.  I am at peace when I am creating and now have over 54 amazing products – Cleaning, Personal care, Teas, Baby, Pet, Essential Oils, and Soaps that myself and my staff hand make from scratch; not including the Weeds & Seeds Survival Cereal made in my factory outlet on the same property in a separate building.

Who are you talking to, or the audience you wish to influence?  Our customers are babies to the elderly and are those mothers who are concerned what is in the products they use on their children, baby boomers knew of earth products in their youth and got swept into the chemical world and now want to reconnect with product knowledge, the elderly who were raised on the ‘concoctions’ their parents created using herbs & oils from the earth, through my products, find a familiarity and also want to reconnect.

Let us discuss medium such as books, music or films…

I truly resonate with Rosemary Gladstar who was a pioneer in the herbal movement and has been called the ‘godmother of American Herbalism’.  She began over 35 years ago developing herbal formulas in her herb shop, Rosemary’s Garden in Sonoma County, California.  She is the founder of the California School of Herbal Studies, the oldest running herb school in the United States, author of ‘The Science and Art of Herbalism’, and is the

Director of the International Herb Symposium as well as ‘The New England Women’s Herbal Conference held annually.  She is the author of numerous herb books including the best seller Herbal Healing for Women.  All Herbs, in my world are the answer to disease, earth and water pollution, and homeostasis for all living things, as well, the sincerity in all of my products.

Social Activism?

The one person I admire, and think of first is David Suzuki.  He, of course, is Canadian and a Scientist, and one whom I highly respect when it comes to environmental activists.  He has dedicated his life to science and earth awareness toward the betterment of all living things.  I too, through alchemy research and development use  roots, leaves, flowers, resins and essential oils to create medicine, poultices, and health also for the betterment of all living things.  One day I will meet him.

Any films, reality documentary, Hollywood cinema in the past 3 years that have fascinated you with its newness, with narrative-form, with its truth?

logoWhy Hemp?  I carefully picked out and researched each seed and each plant that would be used in Weeds & Seeds.

The utmost priority was to provide a well-balanced food that would complement each other, creating a delicious & nutritious survival cereal for health nuts.

I feel that Hemp is finally getting the recognition and respect it deserves in the food market today.  The purity of its healing powers ensures a healthy heart and mind and is a true gift from nature.

Hemp provides my cereal with its protein, and I boast that it not only contains all 20 amino acids but contains all 9 of the essential ones that our bodies don’t produce, as well as Vitamin E, trace minerals, and is also the richest source known of polyunsaturated fatty acids.  While the list seems to be endless of the healing properties of hemp, my customer base are well read, health conscious consumers, so it’s just a matter of providing hemp based healthy choice to my very grateful family, friends, and customers.  There is an incredible ‘feel good’ feeling in honoring our bodies by eating healthy and that is enough motivation for me to continue to create recipes to do this.
